Beat Allergies Naturally: How to Make Your Own Herbal Oxymel

Learn how to make a simple and effective herbal oxymel to combat seasonal allergies in Central Texas and enjoy the benefits of natural allergy relief.

Oxymel (pronounced ahk-suh-mel) is an ancient remedy made by combining honey, vinegar, and herbs, and it's been used for centuries to promote health and wellness. It's super easy to make at home with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. In this blog post, we'll walk you through how to make oxymel, explain why allergies are so bad in Central Texas, and outline the benefits of taking oxymel daily.

How to Make Oxymel

To make oxymel, you'll need the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup raw honey

  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 1/4 cup dried herbs (such as nettle, elderflowers, or peppermint)

Here are the steps to make oxymel:

  1. In a large glass jar, combine the raw honey and apple cider vinegar. Mix well.

  2. Add the dried herbs to the jar. You can use one type of herb or a combination of herbs, depending on your preference.

  3. Stir the mixture well to ensure that all of the herbs are coated with the honey and vinegar.

  4. Cover the jar with a tight-fitting lid and let it sit in a cool, dark place for 2-4 weeks, shaking the jar every day to distribute the herbs.

  5. After 2-4 weeks, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove the herbs.

  6. Transfer the herbal oxymel to a clean glass jar or bottle and store it in a cool, dark place.

Why Allergies Are So Bad in Central Texas

Central Texas is known for its beautiful wildflowers and lush greenery, but it's also notorious for its high levels of pollen and allergens. This is because Central Texas has a humid, subtropical climate that's perfect for growing plants and trees. When these plants and trees release pollen into the air, it can trigger allergic reactions in many people.

In addition to pollen, Central Texas is also prone to high levels of mold spores, which can grow in damp areas and cause respiratory issues. All of these allergens can lead to uncomfortable symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes.

Benefits of Taking Oxymel Daily

Oxymel is packed with beneficial nutrients and compounds that can help promote health and wellness. Here are some of the benefits of taking oxymel daily:

  1. Boosts Immunity: Honey and vinegar both contain antibacterial and antiviral properties, which can help strengthen the immune system and ward off infections.

  2. Aids Digestion: The combination of honey and vinegar can also help improve digestion by stimulating the production of digestive enzymes.

  3. Reduces Inflammation: Many of the herbs used in oxymel, such as nettle and elderflowers, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the body.

  4. Soothes Sore Throats: Honey is a natural cough suppressant and can help soothe sore throats.

  5. Improves Energy: Apple cider vinegar is known to improve energy levels and reduce fatigue, making it a great addition to your daily routine.

Overall, oxymel is a natural, easy-to-make remedy that can help promote health and wellness.

I personally purchase my herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs or my local herb shop. Although local herb shops can be hard to find and low on stock. Also, for best results, make sure that your honey is sourced locally and bottled 60 days or so before the allergies you’re trying to combat. That way, the pollen from the plants you suffer from will be in the honey.

Let me know if you make it and if it helps at all!
